In celebration of All Aberdeen Read’s title, Bill Bryson’s adult non-fiction memoir, “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid,” we invite area writers and artists to submit original works inspired by Superheroes or the 1950’s nostalgia.
Prizes will be awarded for First and Second place in each category. $25 in Chamber Bucks for First and $20 in Chamber Bucks for Second place winners.
Participants may enter a maximum of 3 writing
submissions and 4 art submissions.
Writing Contest Guidelines
Age groups for writing contest: Middle School (Grades 6-8), High School (Grades 9-12), Adult 19-54, Seniors 55+.
Writing categories: poetry and narrative/short story.
Poetry submissions can consists of a maximum of four different poems of any length with
maximum of 5 typed pages. The author’s name may not appear on the front of page.
Please include authors name and contact info on back of work.
Personal narrative/short story submissions must be 12 point typed, doubled spaced. The title of the manuscript and page number must appear on the top of each page. The author’s name may not appear on the front of page. Please include authors name and contact info on back of work.
All works must not exceed 1500 words (approx. 3-4pages)
Entries must be submitted to the Alexander Mitchell Public Library, 519 S Kline St,
Aberdeen, SD 57401, by 9pm, April 1, 2010.
Art Contest Guidelines
Age groups for art work: Middle School (Grades 6-8), High School (Grades 9-12), Adult 19-54, Seniors 55+.
Art work categories: photography and 2D works of art (drawings, painting, collage, etc) no 3D will be accepted.
Artwork must not be larger than 18X24.
All paper, poster, photographs, etc. must be matted.
A frame is not required for mounted canvas.
Art work will be judged based on its originality and adherence to the themes mentioned above.
All judges decisions are final.
Artwork must be suitable for all audiences.
Artwork without proper artist contact information will not be accepted: Name, phone number and title of work.
The Alexander Mitchell Public Library and the Aberdeen Recreational Cultural Center are not responsible for lost or damaged artwork.
Entries must be submitted to the Alexander Mitchell Public Library, 519 S Kline St,
Aberdeen, SD 57401, by 9pm, April 1, 2010.
Contestants will be responsible for picking up their entries after April 30that the ARCC.
